Henk Aalten joined DSM in 1989 after finalizing his PhD in Chemistry. After assignments in Research, Marketing and Strategy he became in 1997 active in the field of Regulatory Affairs.

Since 2006 he is Head Region Europe Regulatory Affairs of the DSM Nutrition Cluster.

Prof. Dr. med. Hans. K. Biesalski is currently heading the Department of Biological Chemistry and Nutrition at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Germany. After his studies of Physics at the University of Mainz (1971-1974) and his appointment as Research Assistant at the Department of Physiology, Division of Physics, in 1979, he graduated in 1981 with an MD thesis about ‘Progressive Hearing Disorders in Childhood’. In 1993, he was appointed Associate Professor, then full C4-Professor at the Department of Biological Chemistry and Nutrition at the University of Hohenheim.

Prof. Dr. Biesalski is a member of the Executive Boards and Scientific Advisory Boards of the most important German health societies and academies and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the US Pharmacopoeia. He is also a board member of several scientific journals and a member of different international societies and vitamin consultative groups.

Professor Biesalski has given lectures in nutrition physiology and nutrition medicine in European Medical Schools. He has chaired several international conferences (amongst others the WHO Conference on Nutrition and Cancer in 1997 and the First Congress Nutrition Teams).

Dr Evelyn Breitweg-Lehmann has studied Pharmaceutical sciences, and has a degree as a pharmacist, license to practice pharmacy. She obtained a doctor’s degree at Free University of Berlin, Department of Pharmacology, graduation as Dr. rer. nat.

She joined the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety in 2002, first as a Scientific officer in Unit 103 and Unit 104: Co-ordination of Monitoring and Surveillance programs, rapid alert systems, later as Head of the Units “Monitoring programs, Data Management and Data Analysis” and “General Affairs of Food, Food of Non-Animal Origin”.

Graham Brookes is an agricultural economist and consultant with 24 years’ experience of examining economic issues relating to the agricultural and food sectors.

He is a specialist in analyzing the impact of technology and policy changes and, has undertaken a number of research projects relating to the impact of EU policy and legislation, especially economic impact assessments. This work includes economic assessments of EU regulations on the approval of pesticides, the approval of new technology such as agricultural biotechnology and health claims legislation.

He has also undertaken numerous projects evaluating the impact of EU policies and policy change in the agricultural sector.

Stefania Dalfrà graduated from the University of Pharmacy of Padua, and obtained a Master's Degree in Herbal medicine, a Diploma of Toxicology and a Degree of specialization in Health Law.
She is now active as a pharmacist at the Ministry of Health, Directorate General, Food Safety and Nutrition, Office IV which is responsible for foods for particular nutritional purposes (PARNUTS), food supplements, novel foods, foods with added vitamins and minerals, functional foods and herbal products.

She is particularly responsible for the notification for the marketing of food supplements and use of plants and plant-substances in food supplements.
She represents the Ministry of Health in the European Union and other institutions (EFSA) on issues related to nutrition and food safety.

She gives classes in matters relating to diet, nutrition and food safety to master graduate students and in seminars organized by local health authorities, professional associations, including in the training program continues ECM, or directed to NAS.

Valérie De Bourayne is the Senior Regulatory Affairs Manager, Europe, for Kemin Health, where she is responsible for regulatory compliance of the company’s food and food supplement ingredients. Valerie’s experience includes responsibility for Quality Assurance at Aventis Pharma and Pharmacia & Upjohn, and for Regulatory Affairs at Aventis Pasteur.

Kemin Health is a global manufacturer and marketer of nutritional ingredients for the food, beverage and food supplement markets.

Mr Mathioudakis has a scientific background having studied first Biochemistry and then Human Nutrition at the University of London.

He joined the European Commission in 1982. He has worked on food legislation for more than 25 years covering a variety of dossiers (dietetic foods, food supplements, nutrition labelling and addition of vitamins and minerals to foods). Since 2004 he chairs the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCFCAH) - section General Food Law.

As representative of the European Commission Mr. Mathioudakis has followed work on the relevant subjects at international level (Codex Alimentarius, World Health Organisation, Food and Agriculture Organisation).

He also follows closely the work of the scientific advisory bodies in the area of Nutrition in general and in particular on the subjects for which his unit is responsible. For 15 years (1982-1997) he was the secretary of the Working Group on Nutrition and Dietetic Foods of the Scientific Committee for Food of the European Commission.

Pieter Pekelharing has a degree in process technology at the institut “de Maere” in Enschede, Holland.

In 1971, he joined Stork Amsterdam as a product manager, to become a sales manager at Barentz in 1979.

Pieter Pekelharing is (co) founder and CEO of Spencer Food Industrial and since 1991 also (co) founder and CEO of Winclove Bio Industries.

Since 2002, he is member of the board of NPN (Dutch Association of Health Products).
Since 2006, Pieter Pekelharing is the President of the foundation “Food and Nutrition Delta”.

John Redman has worked in senior positions in the UK natural health products industry for nearly 25 years with Booker, Ferrosan, Peter Black and, since 2003 with Merck Consumer Healthcare.

He has been Managing Director of Lamberts Healthcare throughout most of this time.

Having started his career in Human Resources, Mr Redman’s business experience includes the Direct-to-Consumer mail order market, marketing to Healthcare Practitioners and the marketing of some of the UK’s leading brands through pharmacy and grocery channels. He also has experience of working in businesses involved in the development, manufacturing and packing of food supplements, the supply of retailer own brands and cross-border sales into international markets.

John Redman led the Health Food Manufacturers’ Association (HFMA) as Chairman from 2006 to 2010 and is now Vice-Chairman and a Board Member of EHPM.

He was appointed Group Managing Director of Merck Consumer Healthcare UK in 2010.

David Richardson is a specialist consultant in nutrition and food science. He holds visiting professorships at the Universities of Reading and Newcastle.

He began his career in teaching and research at the University of London and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He then embarked on a 20-year career with Nestlé UK Ltd, ultimately becoming Group Chief Scientist.

He is scientific adviser to the UK Council for Responsible Nutrition and a member of the Scientific Forum of IADSA. Professor Richardson is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry. He is also a member of Council of the Nutrition and Health Forum of the Royal Society of Medicine, London.

Michele Sadler is a consultant nutrition scientist working in the food and supplements industry, and is Scientific Adviser to the HFMA.

Michele has a BSc in Nutrition from the University of London, a PhD in Nutrition & Biochemistry from the University of Surrey, and is a Registered Public Health Nutritionist.

Michele is Editor in Chief of the Encyclopedia of Human Nutrition (1st Edition) published by Academic Press.

Bruno Scarpa is a medical nutritionist and dietician.
He is the head of Office IV of Directorate General, Food Safety and Nutrition of Italian Health Ministry, that is responsible for food supplements, foods for particular nutritional purposes (PARNUTS), novel foods, foods with added vitamins and minerals, functional foods and herbal products.

Since many years he deals with this area, including the Italian and EU legislation.
He is author of many papers and books on this field.

He is an expert in matters relating to diet, nutrition and food safety and has taken the stand at several seminars organized by local health authorities, professional associations, including in the training program continues ECM.

Bogusław Sonik holds a Master's in law and administration from the Jagiellonian University (1978).
After an impressive career as a journalist and a correspondent, he entered the European Parliament (MEP) in 2004.
He is a vice chairman of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety.

The Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety deals with all food related issues within the European Parliament. Bogusław Sonik has been following the issue of the Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation and in has participated in the debates related to this subject.

Andreas Varlamos is Chemical Engineer (M.Eng. level) specialized in the Foodstuffs area (National Technical University of Athens/Greece, 1991). He holds a M.Sc. distinction degree in Food Technology/Food Quality Assurance (University of Reading/UK, 1992).

He has involved in food risk – benefit analysis related issues, and he participated as representative of BEUC in several EFSA scientific colloquia & stakeholders meetings.

At the end of 2008 he was elected as Chair of the Stakeholders Consultative Platform of the European Food Safety Authority - EFSA (the platform has as permanent members the major EU level organizations/federations dealing with EFSA remit).

Finally he is Chair of the Food & Biotechnology Standing Committee of the Greek Technical Chamber, he was/is member (or sub-) of the Food T.C. of the Greek Organization for Standardization (ELOT), of the National Dietary Policy Committee (Greek Ministry of Health), of the ISO Working Group on Food Traceability (as ELOT representative), and of the horizontal T.C. of the Greek Accreditation Body (ESYD)
